Materials Laboratory

MENU

The Materials Laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences of Istanbul Okan University provides a modern educational and research environment where students can experimentally investigate the mechanical and thermal properties of materials. By enabling a deeper understanding of material behavior, the laboratory allows students to reinforce their theoretical knowledge through practical applications in material selection, engineering design, and product performance evaluation processes.

The laboratory includes various experimental systems used to measure and characterize material behavior under different loading conditions. A universal testing machine is used to conduct fundamental mechanical tests such as tensile, compression, and bending tests, while a hardness testing device provides quantitative measurements of surface hardness. In addition, an impact testing device is used to evaluate the toughness of materials.

The investigation of microscopic structures and surface characteristics is carried out using a metallurgical microscope and a microscope image analysis system, allowing students to closely observe the internal microstructure of materials. Furthermore, a thermal properties measurement setup enables experimental analysis of how materials interact with heat and respond to thermal conditions.

The Materials Laboratory offers a comprehensive infrastructure that supports accurate and reliable measurement of material performance characteristics across engineering disciplines. Through these experiments, students develop technical competencies that allow them to support critical engineering decisions—such as material selection, design optimization, failure analysis, and product reliability—with scientifically grounded data.
